During the Fall Semester of 2014, one of my classes was Intermediate Composition, also known as ENG 2089. My class consisted solely of UHP students and the course was counted as an Honors experience. I had this class MWF from 10:10 to 11:05 with Professor Lisa Beckelhimer, one of my favorite professors I’ve had thus far.
Since I hadn’t taken an English course since AP English Lit in high school, my reading and writing skills hadn’t been tested extensively in some time. ENG2089 challenged me to think outside of the box both when reading new text and writing to answer prompts; I read a book about zombies (World War Z) and analyzed the social issues it presented, I wrote an essay about a Perfect Bacon Bowl to show how the use of fear can sell a product, and I created a children’s storybook to inform younger kids about the importance of education. All of these pieces that I created in this class were representative of my unique approach to assignments, an approach which hadn’t really been presented to others since my last English course.
One of the many skills I gained through this course is the ability to present information to different audiences, namely through our Multi-Genre project; we previously had chosen topics to write a research essay about, such as the importance of higher education in society, and had to create three forms of media to display information regarding the topic to audiences. One of the genres I created was the storybook I mentioned earlier. To view my book, click the document attached below.
